A Simple French Press Coffee Recipe

A French press is a useful choice when you want to make coffee with a kettle, a timer and a little counter space. Start with one repeatable recipe, then change one thing at a time to make it yours.

The starting recipe

Use 30 grams of coarsely ground coffee and 450 grams of water, a 1:15 ratio. Use a press with enough capacity for the water, coffee and the headroom required by its instructions. This makes a small batch; the amount poured will be less than the water added because some stays with the grounds.

Aim for water around 93°C or 200°F and about four minutes of brewing time. These choices fall within the National Coffee Association’s French press guidelines. Follow your own press’s safety instructions.

Brew and serve

1. Put the clean press on a stable surface and add the measured coffee. Pour in the hot water carefully.

2. Gently stir with a utensil suitable for your carafe, then place the lid on with the plunger raised. Start the timer when water first meets coffee.

3. At about four minutes, lower the plunger slowly and carefully. Never force a resistant plunger.

4. Pour into cups or a separate serving vessel when brewing is finished. Clean the press and filter after use according to the maker’s directions.

Choose a coffee you want to taste

For a medium-dark option, Dwarven Dawn lists caramel, dark chocolate, hazelnut and citrus notes. For a dark-roast direction, Nevermore lists chocolate undertones and a deep roasted finish. Neither is a required choice for the method; pick the profile that sounds good to you.

Whole bean lets you set a coarse grind at home. If you order ground coffee, verify the grind suits a French press before you buy.

Keep a useful brew note

Record coffee name, coffee weight, water weight, grind setting and time. Add one plain observation: too strong, too weak, comfortable to drink black or better with milk. That is enough to make your next attempt more deliberate.

For the next brew, change just one variable so you can tell what helped. Keep your favorite recipe beside the brewer.

Manufacturer reference: Bodum CHAMBORD instructions also use coarse coffee, roughly four minutes and a slow plunge. Your own equipment’s instructions take priority.
